Unugalla Estate

A Highland Blend of Tea, Spice & Scenic Trails

Nestled between Badulla and Hali-Ela in the heart of Uva Province, Unugalla Estate stands out as a uniquely diverse plantation – not only renowned for its premium teas but also as the largest commercially cultivated pepper estate in Sri Lanka. Established in 1928 by Mr. Craig John, Unugalla has blossomed into a model estate for agricultural diversity and eco-conscious practices.

Historical and Agricultural Legacy

Unugalla was originally planted with seedling tea during the pre-war period, later introducing VP teas in 1974, enhancing its yield and quality. After nationalization in 1975, it was managed by the Janatha Estates Development Board until the privatization wave in 1992, when it was vested with Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC.

A Pioneer in Pepper Cultivation

Today, Unugalla is not just a tea estate — it’s the only Rainforest Alliance Certified pepper producer in Sri Lanka, cultivating over 150,000 pepper vines across its sprawling fields. This dual cultivation adds a remarkable dimension to the estate’s profile, combining heritage with innovation in spice farming.

Eco-Tourism and Scenic Beauty

Unugalla Estate lies at the heart of Stage 19 of the Pekoe Trail — the internationally acclaimed trekking route ranked as the “Number 1 Trail in the World for 2025.” This unique location makes Unugalla not just a plantation but a destination for nature lovers, trekkers, and tea enthusiasts alike.
