St. James Estate
Uva’s Flavory Treasure Since 1904
Perched at the edge of the Malwatte Valley in Sri Lanka’s iconic Uva Province, St. James Estate is celebrated for its distinctive flavory teas that captivate connoisseurs worldwide. Established in 1904 by Mr. W. E. Crofton, this high-elevation estate continues to uphold a legacy of tradition, quality, and refinement.
Historical Origins
Originally owned by Mr. T. E. Sampayo and Mr. J. W. De Silva, St. James Estate was one of the pioneering seedling tea plantations in the Uva region. In 1924, ownership transitioned to the St. James (Uva) Tea Company Limited, with Messrs Mackwoods and Company appointed as managing agents—marking the beginning of a new era in its development.
With planting beginning as all seedling tea, the estate gradually introduced VP teas from 1943 onwards, further enhancing the consistency and character of its leaf.
Geographical and Climatic Advantage
Situated at 1189 meters above sea level, St. James Estate enjoys ideal conditions for tea cultivation, especially during the famed Uva Flavory Season toward the end of June each year. During this period, unique climatic changes cause the tea leaves to develop their distinct flavor profile, producing high-quality teas that are in high demand on the global market.
St. James Estate is committed to sustainable and ethical practices, proudly holding Rainforest Alliance Certification, which highlights its dedication to biodiversity conservation and the welfare of its workers.
A Legacy Preserved
After the nationalization in 1975, the estate was managed by the Janatha Estates Development Board until the privatization in 1992, when it became part of Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC.
From its rich colonial heritage to its globally sought-after flavory teas, St. James Estate remains a jewel of Uva’s highlands — where tradition and taste meet in perfect harmony
