Downside Estate
A Heritage Rooted in the Highlands of Uva
Founded in 1910 by Mr. Loby under the management of the Downside Estate Company, Downside Estate is a century-old tea plantation located in the scenic Uva / Uda Pussellawa Range of Badulla District, Sri Lanka. With a legacy that spans over 110 years, the estate stands as a testament to tradition, excellence, and sustainable growth.
Set at an elevation ranging from 909 meters to 1,201 meters above sea level, and nourished by an annual rainfall of approximately 1500 mm, Downside offers the perfect conditions for cultivating distinctive, flavorful teas. The estate covers a cultivated extent of 343.54 hectares, divided across the Downside, Craig Forest, New Hugoland, and Pussellawa divisions.
In 1934, the estate’s tea factory was constructed by W. De. La Hoyde, and it continues to serve as the processing hub at 1067 meters (3500 ft) above sea level. Classified under the Uva Medium Grown elevation category, Downside teas reflect the vibrant, nuanced qualities that this highland region is renowned for.
Nationalized in 1975 and overseen by the Janatha Estates Development Board until 1992, Downside Estate has since been managed by Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC, whose expertise has helped modernize the estate while preserving its rich heritage.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Today, Downside Estate is Rainforest Alliance certified, upholding best practices in environmental, social, and economic sustainability. With responsible stewardship and a forward-looking approach, the estate continues to thrive as a key contributor to Sri Lanka’s premium tea industry.
