Neluwa Estate
Established in 1922, Neluwa Estate is a heritage tea plantation nestled in the scenic highlands of the Uva Province, within the Badulla District of Sri Lanka. Originally planted by Mr. S.F.A. Senanayake, the estate has grown over the decades to become a hallmark of quality and tradition in the tea industry.
A Legacy Rooted in the Highlands
Set amidst the renowned Malwatte Valley, Neluwa Estate flourishes at elevations ranging from 1216 to 1368 meters above sea level, benefiting from ideal climatic conditions and an annual rainfall of 2066 mm. With a cultivated extent of 233.41 hectares, the estate has earned a stellar reputation for producing Uva seasonal teas, especially during the dry months of July and August.
Distinctive Quality, Certified Standards
Teas produced at Neluwa Estate carry a unique flavor profile, thanks to the estate’s exceptional terroir. These leaves are exclusively manufactured and sold under the Uva Highlands mark, a testament to their distinct taste and premium quality. Neluwa is a Rainforest Alliance Certified plantation, reflecting its commitment to sustainable practices and biodiversity conservation.
A Proud History of Management
After its nationalization in 1975, Neluwa Estate was managed by the Janatha Estates Development Board until 1992. Since the industry’s privatization, the estate has been under the expert care of Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC, ensuring the legacy continues with innovation and integrity.
The Neluwa Tea Factory
Built in 1928, the Neluwa Factory now functions as a reprocessing center for Orthodox teas. Located at an elevation of 1368 meters, the factory is equipped with modern processing capabilities and is certified for ISO 22000, HACCP, GMP, and Rainforest Alliance standards.
