Planted in 1908 by Mr. Norman Stewart, Attampitiya Estate is located in the heart of Uva Province. With a unique history and an exceptional location surrounding the town of Ettampitiya, the estate is part of the prestigious Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC.
A Rich History and Cultural Significance
Attampitiya Estate is steeped in history. It is named after King Walagamba’s military base, known as “Sattanpitiya,” dating back to the 17th century. The estate was originally managed by Attampitiya Limited, before being nationalized in 1975 and managed by the Janatha Estates Development Board until 1992. Since privatization, it has been operated by Malwatte Valley Plantations PLC, continuing its legacy of producing premium tea.
Ideal Growing Conditions for Premium Tea
The estate spans a cultivated extent of 277.44 hectares, situated at elevations ranging from 915 to 1616 meters above sea level. This vast range of altitude offers the ideal conditions for growing premium-quality tea with the unique characteristics of the Uva Medium elevation category.
The Pekoe Trail and Global Recognition
Attampitiya Estate holds a special place in the world’s tea tourism landscape. It is located along the 19th stage of the famous Pekoe Trail, which has been ranked as the number one trail in the world for 2025. This recognition not only highlights the beauty of the region but also the historical significance and the extraordinary tea culture of the area.

Attampitiya Estate is a Rainforest Alliance Certified Plantation, ensuring that the estate operates in an environmentally sustainable manner. The estate has also obtained ISO 22000, HACCP, and GMP certifications, affirming its adherence to global food safety and quality standards.
The Attampitiya Tea Factory
The Attampitiya Tea Factory was established in 1871, and sits at an elevation of 1194 meters above sea level. The factory produces Orthodox Leafy teas, celebrated for their robust and distinct flavor profile. The tea from Attampitiya Estate is sold under the Attampitiya mark, showcasing the unique qualities derived from the estate’s ideal growing conditions.
